Melee slashers: a quick start guide
This guide is mainly for new players coming into the genre. Every melee slasher is different, but a few core mechanics carry over between most of them.
Melee slasher A melee-focused game that uses real-time swings.
01 Offensive mechanics
- Real-time swings
- Weapon tracers are checked in real time along the length of the weapon to decide whether it hits — or gets parried. Introduced by Chivalry: Medieval Warfare.
- Feint
- Cancelling an attack mid-swing — either to bait out your enemy’s parry, or simply to avoid missing.
- Combo
- Chaining multiple attacks in sequence, whether the previous one missed or landed.
02 Defensive mechanics
- Parry
- Blocking an attack. Depending on the game it’s either timed or held.
- Kick / jab
- A fast, low-damage attack — usually used to stop an opponent’s combo or punish facehugging.
03Shorthand
You'll often see combinations of these mechanics shortened to acronyms:
- FTP
- Feint-to-parry
- CFTP
- Combo feint-to-parry

Parry trainer
Each swing is a ring closing in on the centre, speeding up as it lands. Right click (or Space) to parry so your 325ms parry is active when it hits. Some swings are feints that pull back late — don't parry those, even after they pull back. Read one and you get a short opening: left click (or F) to punish it before the follow-up comes. Attacking at any other time leaves you open.
